Gaulart et Maliclet Cafe

Have you ever walked into a place and felt transported?  To another time?  Another place?  Another lifetime?  It happens.  Occasionally.

It happened when I walked into Gaulart et Maliclet.  France.  Paris, to be exact.  Summer 2006.  Eight days of the hottest heat I have ever felt.  Eight days of strolling.  I usually use the word wandering but in Paris it felt like strolling.  We looked.  We explored.  We drank huge amounts of water and wine and ate entire baguettes of fresh bread.  We sat in cafes for hours and watched true Parisians in "their" city.  At home.  Living their life. We fell in love with a city and a way of life.

This restaurant brought it all back.  Every vivid memory of one of the few places that I have been in this world that felt like home.  I can't explain it.  I won't bore you with trying.  But, take it as a fact, that Paris felt like returning home.  One day, I am still hoping that it is our home.

If you are strolling the streets of Charleston, this is one out of the way, tucked in, teeny place that you need to visit.  Don't expect fast food.  Don't come in with expectations.  Walk in and experience Paris in Charleston.

We started our anniversary dinner with this....

House wine.  Palmetto Amber.  Butter.  French bread.  When we added a cheese plate, I could have called it a day....

Next, some salad and the absolute best broccoli soup ever while waiting for our fondue pot to heat.   Seafood was the call of the day.  Shrimp, scallops, and tilapia in a beautiful spiced broth.  A true Parisian meal....no stress.  Relax.  Wait.  Watch the people.  Talk....

It's not just the menu, it's the atmosphere.  It's Croque Monsieurs, croissants, fresh baguettes, house wines, and books and people and ancient wood work.  A tiny space filled with food and conversation and ideas that fill your mind, body and soul...

We fell in love with this Charleston Treasure.  We are heading there again today.  For lunch.  To share it with my oldest son.  To give him a taste of Paris in Charleston.  Check it out...
