Plantation Singers

How do you keep 1,050 students focused?  Tuned-in?  That's easy!  Bring in the Plantation Singers to entertain and teach them.  Our students had such a treat last week with our guests!

"The Plantation Singers are a local group of a capella musicians who are known nationally as well as internationally.  They have performed at the Greenbriar Inn in West Virginia. They have performed before General Wm. Westmoreland, the Prince of Scotland, Joel Silver (Hollywood producer), the Mayor of Charleston Joseph Riley, the Cato family of Cato Fashion stores and many, many, more.

The Plantation Singers are well known for their ability to reach out and draw a crowd into their performance. The shoe tapping, hand clapping, and sing along atmosphere causes the audience to smile big, hug their neighbors and ask for more."

To draw a crowd into their performance is an understatement.  Our students were tapping their toes and clapping their hands.  Mesmerized by the brightly colored African garb and traditional instruments, there was no need for teachers to remind students to pay attention!

Our students got to experience the sound of the Gullah language, hear about the history of the Gullah people and experience the melodies and rhythmic sounds of the Gullah music.  They didn't move for an hour!  Except to clap, snap, sing, and move to the music...

They also got to listen to a short talk on the Sweet Grass Basket industry that is so very popular around the Lowcountry.  The amount of time required to create these baskets is incredible!

The Plantation Singers became a performance group in 1996 under the direction of Ms. Lynnette White.  She created the organization to perform around the Lowcountry and the group's popularity has grown tremendously over the years.

If you ever have the opportunity to see this group, don't let it pass you by!  They are full of energy and knowledge of the Gullah people.  Our students absolutely loved them.  You will, too!
